Many were able to maintain their own Creole of color social institutions in the form of schools, churches, and social clubs. These social institutions were important resources because many of the Creoles who founded and frequented them were descended from free people of color who had been free—​and often well educated—​for generations. In this way, they were able to place something of a buffer between themselves and the worst of Jim Crow oppression. Thus, in contrast to the white Creoles examined in Chapter 3 who blended into white Anglo-​American society, many Creoles of color saw a benefit in preserving their Creole identity because it provided a way of resisting the degrading racial effects of the Anglo-​American racial system.
