Langsdorff had scuttled his once-proud ship rather than face the destruction he thought he would face outside Uruguayan territorial waters. The explosive charges planted by Langsdorff and his men totally destroyed the Graf Spee, which, blazing furiously, soon settled into the mud of the River Plate. 54 The sad remains of the Graf Spee lie in the shallow waters outside Montevideo harbour. 55 Kapitan Hans Langsdorff is buried in Montevideo. Three days after the destruction of his ship, Kapitan Langsdorff, proud and honourable to the last, shot himself in his hotel room in Montevideo.

Tragically, the blockships that had been sent for to make the defences more secure arrived the day after the sinking. Opposite top: Prien's first torpedo, which struck the battleship on her bow, did only limited damage, but, to his amazement, it also did very little to attract attention. Consequently he fired again, and this time the Royal Oak was struck amidships. The ship exploded in a ball of flame and sank, taking over 800 men with her. The Admiralty and the public were horrified that such an attack could take place inside Scapa Flow, the anchorage of the Home Fleet.

Opposite top: On the morning of 13 December the Graf Spee ran head first into the three cruiser squadron of Commodore Henry Harwood off the coast of South America. Harwood, who was flying his pennant in the light cruiser Ajax, had plotted the course of the raider and despite the absence of the heavy cruiser Cumberland, then undergoing repairs at the Falkland Islands, was determined to bring Langsdorff to battle. Harwood's other ships included the heavy cruiser Exeter and the New Zealand ship Achilles (shown here).
