The small local garrisons were unenthusiastic about committing themselves to the Emperor, yet equally unwilling to oppose him. The entire enterprise hung in the balance. By 1700 hours the Emperor and his tiny army were ashore. There, by chance, shortly after Napoleon debarked he encountered Colonel Honore Grimaldi, the Prince of Monaco, riding through town with a small entourage. The Emperor asked the Prince, who had commanded a regiment with great distinction during Napoleon's later campaigns, to join his great venture.
